Your balance can grow while its buying power shrinks. Explore the difference with the Purchasing Power Simulator.

Understand the assumptions

This simulation uses fixed annual interest and inflation, annual compounding, and no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes. Sample rates are illustrative, not current market rates or forecasts.

How the calculation works

Future balance = starting savings × (1 + interest ÷ 100)years.

Today’s buying power = future balance ÷ (1 + inflation ÷ 100)years.

Retained purchasing power = today’s buying power ÷ starting savings × 100. At 100%, you preserve buying power; below 100%, you lose it; above 100%, you gain it. Calculations use unrounded values; displayed amounts are rounded.
